Modern technology and materials set new standards for efficiency and work safety:

New tools for meter installation

A large energy supply company (EVU) was faced with the challenge of increasing safety when installing energised meters. Previous tools could cause short circuits and the limited space available for electricity meters made it difficult to use insulated tools. Installers often removed the insulation or used non-insulated tools, which is dangerous.

According to BGV A2, energised meter installation may be carried out if there is a compelling reason. Even if meters are loose or hanging crooked, the voltage is often not switched off. New safety standards and more efficient solutions have therefore been developed to reduce costs for personnel, tools and accidents.

Requirements and solutions: Insulating tools made of non-conductive materials:

• New insulating materials enable safe live assembly.
• Innovative tools fulfil all requirements.
• Insulating socket spanners were developed first.
• Ceramic as an insulating material was rejected for cost reasons.
• Special plastic showed sufficient strength values for the required torque.
• Meter fixing screws are tightened to around 2 Nm, the smallest SW8 socket tensioner can withstand more than 12 Nm.

These new tools set new standards in meter installation and contribute to safety and efficiency.
